Federal Offshore Oil and Gas Leasing

Federal offshore leasing takes place on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS), which commences three geographical miles seaward of the national coastline, including three miles seaward of the coastline of offshore islands. Seventy five oil and gas leases are situated offshore the tri-counties of Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo; 39 are either producing or situated in producing units and the remaining 36 leases have not produced. Fifteen platforms currently produce oil and gas offshore Santa Barbara County with another four situated offshore Ventura County.

This paper provides a brief overview of federal oil and gas leasing activities in the OCS offshore California.
