The Nature of the Interaction - Minutes 11-05-2003

Interaction Group
Santa Barbara County

Process Improvement Steering Groups

Interaction Committee

Nov. 5, 2003 Minutes

Andersen’s Pea Soup, Buellton

General information:

Group Chairman Dave Cross called the meeting to order at 4:31 p.m. Eleven people attended, including six non-county staff and consultants.

Minutes:

The Oct. 15 meeting minutes were approved as corrected.

Subcommittee Reports:

Chairman Cross wanted final recommendations from each subcommittee to present to the Board of Supervisors on Dec. 2. He wanted firm feedback from the board to confirm that the improvement process will end where those involved want and hope. We agreed to spend the meeting polishing each subcommittee’s recommendation and bring a final form back to the Nov. 19 meeting for all steering group members to sign. Cross and steering group notetaker Jerry Bunin were assigned to create the final draft and distribute it separate from these notes before the Nov. 19 meeting. That document contains the rest of the work done at the meeting. So these minutes are brief.

Open Discussion

We started discussing what we should do next as a steering group. Susan Warnstrom said that the group should get regular updates from county staff on how our recommendations are being implemented. County staff is being assigned to assure those updates occur. Zoraida Abresch noted that improving the interaction is a two-way street. She suggested the committee next consider methods for making discontented members of the public more civil when they approach county staff. Susette Naylor said that some rude public behavior should be positively impacted when the interaction group’s recommendations are implemented. She suggested that special training might also be offered on how to handle difficult people. We agreed to continue the discussion at future meetings.
